Miller Auto Deltaweld™

This page describes how to integrate and set up communication between the Miller Auto Deltaweld™ power source and SmoothTool X.

Hardware Configuration

SmoothTool X is compatible with the Miller Auto Deltaweld™. To set up communication between the software and a power source, the following items are required:

  • An Auto Deltaweld™ system that supports Modbus TCP.
  • Ethernet cable (part no. 1407362).

Power Source Interface Configuration

Ensure that the power source is set to Modbus TCP on the front panel and that the legacy EIP object model is disabled.

Verify that the IP address of the back panel is reachable by the robot — both must be on the same subnet. For example, if the robot has IP address 192.168.100.2, the power source should be in the same subnet, such as 192.168.100.4.

IP Address

Select a valid IP address for the interface using the power source’s network settings. The IP address must be on the same subnet as the robot.

Hardware Installation

Connect the power source to the robot with the Ethernet cable using the connector on the back side of the machine, as pictured below.

Software Configuration

Once the hardware is configured, add and connect the Miller Auto Deltaweld™ in SmoothTool X.

Add the Auto Deltaweld™

Tap SmoothTool X Settings from the Application view. In the sidebar, under Components, tap Power Sources, then tap Add new power source.

Power Sources page with the Add new power source button

In the Add power source dialog, select the Miller tile and choose the Miller Auto Deltaweld model, then tap Add power source.

Configure the Auto Deltaweld™

Fill in the configuration fields:

Field Description
Custom name A name to identify this power source.
Power source IP address The IP address of the power source. The robot uses this address to communicate with it. Ensure it is set correctly; otherwise the robot cannot connect.
Machine type Select the machine that matches your setup — Auto Deltaweld 350 or Auto Deltaweld 500.
CE marking Select CE marking for CE-certified machines, or None CE marking for non-CE machines. This selects the wire-feed-speed scaling sent to the machine — CE machines expect m/min, non-CE machines in/min — so a wrong choice here makes every wire feed speed wrong without reporting an error.
Configure parameters in the software Controls whether program nodes override the power source parameters at runtime — see Configure parameters in the software below.

Caution

Select the correct Machine type for your setup. If the wrong machine type is selected, activation and connection will not be possible.

When done, tap Done to save the power source.

Configure parameters in the software

The Configure parameters in the software toggle controls how welding parameters are applied:

  • Disabled (default) — the power source keeps the parameters set on the machine; program nodes do not override them.
  • Enabled — program nodes override the power source parameters at runtime, letting you set welding parameters per node from the weld node’s Power source tab.

Connect to the Auto Deltaweld™

Back on the Power Sources page, expand the new entry, tap Selected to make it the active power source, then tap Connect. When the connection is established, a connection status tag is shown on the entry.

Programming with SmoothTool X and Miller Auto Deltaweld™

When Configure parameters in the software is enabled, you can adjust the welding parameters per node from the program tree.

Select a weld node (e.g. Weld Seam) in the program tree and open its Power source tab. The parameters apply when the program reaches that node.

The power source offers two methods for setting the weld parameters: Job number mode and Synergic mode.

Power Source Parameters node for Miller Auto Deltaweld

Job number mode

Select Job number mode to type in the job number saved on the power source and set the parameters directly.

Identifier Description
Job number The desired job saved on the Miller Auto Deltaweld™.
Wire feed speed The desired wire feed speed.
Voltage The desired voltage. Shown for the constant-voltage processes — CV MIG and HD MIG.
Arc control The desired arc control setting.
Arc length The desired arc length. Shown for every other process — Accu-Pulse, RMD MIG and Versa-Pulse.
Sequence settings Opens the arc start and arc end sequence panel — see Sequence settings below.
Transfer parameters Sends the current parameters to the power source. Available once connected.

Voltage and Arc length are alternatives: the process decides which of the two the node shows, so you never set both.

Synergic mode

Select Synergic mode to find the right job number through a guided wizard. Tap Guided setup and follow the steps: Process → Material → Gas → Wire diameter. You can also enter a known Synergic line number directly. Once a line is selected, the button collapses to an edit icon you can tap to change the selection.

Once a synergic line is selected, the general parameters become available (the same as in Job number mode), including Sequence settings. Voltage is shown for CV MIG and HD MIG, and Arc length for the other processes.

Sequence settings

Sequence settings opens a panel with an Arc start and an Arc end tab, covering the stages the power source runs around the weld:

Tab Stages
Arc start Preflow, Run-in, Start, Profile pulse
Arc end Crater fill, Burnback, Retract, Postflow

Each stage has a Mode. Most offer Off, Auto, Custom and On; a stage’s values become editable only once its mode is Custom (or On, for the on/off stages), and the panel says so when they are hidden. Burnback has no mode — its value is always editable — and Crater fill has a mode but no values of its own.

Stage Values
Preflow Flow time
Run-in WFS percent
Start WFS, Voltage, Dwell time, Ramp time
Profile pulse Pulse frequency, Voltage, Arc length, WFS, WFS percent
Crater fill —
Burnback Burnback time
Retract Retract distance
Postflow Flow time

Manual power source controls

The manual controls live in the Power source popover, opened from the button in the operator screen toolbar.

Power source popover showing the manual wire-control and test functions

When connected to the Auto Deltaweld™, the following manual controls are available:

Control Description
Forward Feeds the welding wire forward.
Backward Retracts the welding wire.
Gas Opens the gas valve for the duration of the press.

Warning

Connected to a power source that provides the option to control the wire. Do not use these functions without ensuring no harm can come to people or material. Make sure the area around the welding torch is clear before use.

Simulation

The Simulation toggle at the top of the popover runs the program as a dry run: the robot executes the full program and motion path, but the power source does not weld (no arc, wire feed, or gas). Use it to test a program safely, then turn it off to weld for real.
