Operating Constraints

SmoothTool X is a software add-on (with an optional programming flange) that runs on top of a Universal Robots robot arm and control box. It does not have an independent environmental or power envelope — it inherits the operating limits of the robot it is installed on. This product is designed to operate within the limits described in this section. Operating the system outside these constraints may result in reduced performance, unexpected behavior, equipment damage, or unsafe operating conditions.

Environmental Constraints

  • SmoothTool X must only be operated within the operating temperature, storage temperature, and relative humidity ranges published in the user manual of the specific Universal Robots robot model in use (e-series, UR-series, or UR8L). These ranges vary by robot model — always refer to that robot’s manual rather than assuming a single value across models.
  • The programming flange and its cabling must only be operated within the same environmental limits as the robot arm it is mounted on.
  • Protect the system from direct exposure to water, corrosive chemicals, and excessive dust, in accordance with the IP rating published for the robot arm and control box.
  • Where the robot cell also contains a welding power source, fume extractor, or other integrated equipment, the most restrictive environmental limits of any component in the cell apply to the whole cell.

Power Constraints

  • Use only approved power sources listed in the Power Sources documentation.
  • The SmoothTool X programming flange requires a 24 V tool output from the robot control box; see Programming Flange Configuration for configuration.
  • The robot control box’s input voltage must remain within the range published in the robot manufacturer’s user manual.
  • Do not connect the system to damaged or modified power equipment, cabling, or connectors.

Operational Constraints

  • The system must be fully installed and configured as described in this manual, including hardware installation, software installation, and license activation, before operation.
  • SmoothTool X does not define a maximum continuous operating period beyond that of the robot and power source it is used with — refer to the duty cycle and continuous operation limits published for the welding power source, and the continuous operation limits published for the robot arm.
  • Operate the system only with the robot models, PolyScope X versions, and accessories listed in Technical Specifications.
  • Do not execute a program without having completed and verified a physical dry run first, and do not modify the program tree or welding parameters while the robot is in an active or running state. See Safety Requirements for the full list of unintended-use scenarios.

Compatibility Constraints

  • Use only the supported robot models, PolyScope X versions, and power source integrations listed in Technical Specifications and Power Sources.
  • The only supported method for connecting an otherwise unintegrated power source is the SmoothTool X retrofit kit or URScript callback integration. See Retrofit Kit and URScript Callback.
  • Avoid using other URCaps alongside SmoothTool X unless strictly necessary; see Use of Other URCaps.

Safety Constraints

  • Do not operate the system if signs of damage are present on the robot, control box, programming flange, cabling, welding torch, or power source.
  • Stop operation immediately if abnormal behavior, overheating, or unexpected power loss occurs, and do not resume until the cause has been identified and resolved.
  • Refer to Safety Requirements for the full set of safety obligations that apply to the integrator and user of SmoothTool X.
